The dense R. ponticum grows to be shrub or small tree, which can grow up to 5 m-8 m. With evergreen and long leaves, the plant produces violet-purple flowers that have faint green-yellow streaks on them.

Butea monosperma or Palash is the state flower of Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. The plant is native to sub- tropical and tropical parts of Southeast Asia including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Western Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Laos, India and Malaysia.   The local names of the flower are Flame of the Forest and Bastard Teak. The flowers are bright and vibrant orange-red.

Rabindranath Tagore’s poems have mentioned palash elaborately through his poems and verses and related it with flames. The flower is associated with the arrival of spring. The flower’s name palash comes from the town of Palashi, the battleground of Battle of Plassey.

According to the folklore, it is the form of fire God, Agni.  In Telangana, the flowers are used to worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In Buddhism, it symbolizes achieved enlightenment.
