Nelumbo nucifera is known as Indian lotus, bean of India or scared lotus. It is the most sacred flower in Hindu mythology and related to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. The expanding and unfolding petals of lotus flower suggest the enlightenment and expansion of soul. It is also cited widely in Puranas and Vedas.
Bhagavad Gita says:
One who performs his duty without attachment, surrenders the results, without thinking of benefit or loss, unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected by sinful action, in the same way as the lotus is untouched by water.
The seeds of Lotus can remain viable for cultivation for many years. The oldest seeds of lotus can be dated back to 1,300 years and were found in Northeastern China from a dry lakebed.
